Chondroitin is a component in the glycosaminoglycans in synovial fluid and cartilage. It functions, along with glucosamine, as a lubricant in synovial joints. There is a theory that taking exogenous chondroitin will aid in the production of cartilage and synovial fluid.
This assertion is somewhat controversial.
Most over the counter dietary supplements are usually derived from shark cartilage.

However, chondroitin is similar to a drug used to thin the blood, called Heparin. So theoretically it'spossible for chondroitin to enhance the effects of blood thinners. Chondroitin could also enhance the blood thinning effects of vitamins and supplements such as fish oil and vitamin E.
