In the 1800's Matthew Perry arrived in Japan on two occasions. The first time that he arrived, he wanted Japan to open up ports for trade. He gave Japan one year to make the decision to obey or refuse. The second time, Matthew Perry came with many more ships and scared the Japanese people. The Shogun decided to open up three ports for trade for the United States. After Matthew Perry, more foreigners were successful in opening up Japan for trade.
In Japan, the people hated the way that the foreigners were allowed to come into their country. In addition to that, foreigners were punished much more lightly than native Japanese people for crimes. This resulted in the Meiji Restoration where the Emperor was returned the power to rule and radical transformation began in Japan.
