I think that he meant if you compromise on values/beliefs, they are broken and can never be repaired again. He said this when speaking of his old mistress. He talks about how she was a kindhearted, tender woman, but she eventually gave in to a slaveholder way of life and soon lost all of her excellent qualities. Like Douglass says, "It must stand entire, or it does not stand at all"

The titles speak of itself. fear conscience because of the fear of being punished. moral conscience is more on the values. Christian religious is more on what God wants you to do.

This can be worked out through heartfelt conversation between the two of you. If you can't talk about this together, then there isn't much of a relationship, and certainly this is not "love."
