Almost all HD monitors have standard definition analog inputs as well as HD inputs. Therefore, any DVD player should be able to run with an HD monitor. Later DVD players are likely to have an HDMI port which is the standard HD input to all modern HD televisions.
Just check the type of outputs on the DVD player and compare them against the inputs of the television. There is almost certain to be at least one connection that will be on both.

To play a HD DVD you need a HD DVD player. A standard DVD player will not play a HD DVD, nor will a Blu-ray player. HDMI is just a connection: it won't give your standard DVD player superpowers.
