My maternal grandmother, whose forbears came from N.Carolina and Georgia, by way of Tennessee, into Souheastern Illinois, used to say she would "nuss the baby" while I cooked, etc., when she was visiting. She then would bounce him on her knee or lap, or jiggle him, etc. -- in other words, mind him, or quiet him. Someone told me this is a North Carolina term for tending to a child.
