Guillotine
The Guillotine
Dr. Joseph-Ignace Guillotin (1738-1814) did not invent the device named for him (the guillotine), but suggested such a device be used for "quick and painless" execution by decapitation. Beheading by ax was already widely used for death penalties, but was seen by many as hideous and barbaric. The guillotine acquired a repugnant reputation during the Reign of Terror in France.
I think the word you're looking for is "decapitation", from the Latin "capo", meaning head. Another term is "guillotine", from the name of the machine used for executions during the French Revolution's Reign of Terror. I presume you are not looking for the obvious "beheading".
Dr. Antoine Louis was the original inventor of the execution device known as the Guillotine after Dr. Joseph-Ignace Guillotin who had first proposed that beheading by a simple device should be used for executions to replace the cruel and messy methods of the era ranging from hangings and decapitation by sword to inhumane torture. Ironically Dr. Antoine Louis was indeed executed using his own invention during the Reign of Terror around 1973-1974.
