define social constuction define social constuction
Social Constructionism is defined as the sociological theories of knowledge that consider why certain social phenomena happen. In other words, a social construct is both the cause and effect exemplified by a certain thing. Racism is a social construct in that it explains why people target other people that are different from them. Think back to the days when water fountains were split into 'Whites Only' and 'Colored.' What caused that effect? White people being racist towards colored people. Fortunately racism nowadays is less blatant. Unfortunately, it's still existent. There's a statistic that shows that black people are more likely to get the death penalty than white people, even when the crime is the same. Racism is the social construct that causes that because the skin color of the two criminals is the only variable in that situation.

Social constructionism is a theory that asserts that aspects of reality are not inherent or objective, but rather are created through social interactions and perceptions. It emphasizes the role of language, symbols, and cultural norms in shaping individual and collective understandings of the world. This perspective suggests that social systems and institutions, such as gender, race, and class, are constructed by society rather than being natural or essential categories.
