The definition of a social evil depends on who, when or where it is defined. The answer to this question can literally fill a book. At first glance it's clear that the word evil must be defined. After that it must be determined if it meets the criteria of social. To validate the last few sentences an example is necessary. I'll use human slavery as an example and travel back in time and then deal with the present.
The year is 1750 in Richmond, Virginia, and the discussion involves the institution of slavery on a global scale. An opponent of slavery says that owning slaves is a global evil. It is contended that such a practice is an affront to God and humanity in general.
A proponent of slavery says slavery is lawful and practiced in many parts of the world. Following up, the proponent points out that even The Bible lays out how slaves should be treated, thus it cannot be an affront to God.
We turn the clock forward to 2013.
Basically this social evil of 1750 does not even exist. It's unlawful and not legally practiced anywhere. And, the documents that the US society is based on says that all men & (women)are created equal.
The example is a simplified version of how far a social evil can be defined.
