Religion is a belief in a power greater than one's self, a way of worshipping, a belief system. A way of coming or gathering together with like believers. I believe it's the coming together as one, believing in one God. A spiritual gathering of worshippers. Religion is a collection of traditions, which guide the social development of a particular group of people, with the ultimate hope that when they die, the universe will provide an accommodation for their soul.
These definitions can be organised into two broad types: substantive and functional (see link). A substantive definition has to do with content such as beliefs and so on. A functional definition has to do with the manner in which religion fits with or contributes to wider society (see links).

The two terms actually have similar application.
