Disadvantages/Demerits of Democracy

In a democratic nation, it is the citizens who hold the right to elect their representatives and their governing authorities. According to a common observation, not all the citizens are fully aware of the political scenario in their country. The common masses may not be aware of the political issues in society. This may result in people making the wrong choices during election.

As the government is subject to change after every election term, the authorities may work with a short-term focus. As they have to face an election after the completion of each term, they may lose focus on working for the people and rather focus on winning elections.

Another disadvantage of democracy is that mobs can influence people. Citizens may vote in favor of a party under the influence of the majority. Compelled or influenced by the philosophies of those around, a person may not voice his/her true opinion.

Every form of government is bound to have some shortfalls. Different people have different views about the various political systems. The advantages and disadvantages of any political system have to be weighed carefully in order to arrive at any conclusion.

Democracy means rule by the will of the majority of the people.

To some extent India can be called a democracy because it is ruled by the representatves of the people who are elected thro elections.

But election procedure is faulty. A candidate securing more number of votes than others is elected but the number of candidates is unlimited.

Thus a man securing 30% of the votes is elected because he has secured more than others.But if you see deeply he is not preferred by the 70% of the people of the constituency but still he represents the constituency which is the fault in our election system

Democracy can be thought of as a somewhat more organized version of mob rule. A major problem with allowing the general public to make the rules is that while most people would have no problem telling you what they want, most people lack the wisdom, experience and/or education required to appreciate the costs associated with getting what they want. For example, a welfare recipient may think only that he/she has more than before without considering what kind of life his/her grandchildren will have as they struggle to pay for what their grandparents received. On the national and international level, few debts go unpaid forever. Also, a representative democracy works only as long as serving the people is in the best interest of the representatives. If other interests are allowed to compete against the people for attention, what was a government of, by and for the people eventually becomes a government of, by and for the oil industry, the pharmaceutical industry, etc.
