The United States became involved in World War I primarily for two reasons. First was the threat from Germany of "unrestricted" submarine warfare that would not hesitate to include American ships in its attacks. Second were the actual (and isolated, but very influential) attacks by German "subs" upon a small number of American ships, resulting in the loss of American lives and goods.
The US became involved in World War 1 primarily due to a combination of German aggression and several specific events. Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare, which targeted American merchant ships, raised concerns for US national security. Additionally, the interception of the Zimmerman Telegram, in which Germany offered Mexico an alliance against the US, further pushed the US towards entering the war in support of the Allies.
There was only one reason that America became involved in World War II and that was the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour on 7th December 1941. If that attack hadn't happened, the US would probably not have become involved because US public opinion at the time was that the existing fighting was a 'European War' and nothing to do with America.
They didn't! They fought the Japanese in Timor after the Japanese invaded Indonesia and Malaysia and thus they became involved in World War Two.
