Maggie has been described as an unruly girl with wild thick curly hair which her mother often despairs at. However as she becomes older her main want is for an education and a mean through which she can run away from her thoughts. She also becomes a very beautiful lady who falls in love with her father's arch enemy's son Philip Wakem and seems to connect with him as both of them have a physical deformity, his being that he is hunch backed and hers that she is in the body of a woman.

The title 'The Mill on the Floss' identifies the one building, The Mill, on the River Floss, that causes so much upheaval in lives of the main characters, a brother and sister.Various family problems lead to the loss of the mill, but the old mill, and the river, feature at significant times in the narrative.Anyone who has read the novel will immediately recall, from the title alone, the setting and story which is about how our lives are affected by our environment and external factors over which we often have no control, but that the human will can overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges.
