Yes, it did. One of the reasons for this was imperial endorsement. Constantine the Great converted to Christianity. All but one of the subsequent emperors were Christians. These emperors supported the Christians and took measures against paganism were taken. The co-emperors Gratian and Theodosius I made the mainstream Christian doctrines state religion by declaring them the sole legitimate religion in the empire. Theodosius persecuted the dissident Christian doctrines and the pagans.
