Clarissa Harlowe 'Clara' Barton did have a relationship with (married) John J. Elwell. Clara had one close school friend named Nancy Fritts, but found it difficult to make friends as she was painfully shy. She showed extreme closeness and dedication to family. Later, she became a wonderful teacher, and was perhaps the first woman in government to command a man's salary. Her efforts as the 'Angel of the Battlefield' during the Civil War led to her founding the American Red Cross. For all her efforts and achievements, it is likely Miss Barton had many, many friends by the time she passed away at age 90.
