At one time, Coca Cola did contain trace amounts of the active ingredient in cocaine. However, by the early 20th century, Coca Cola changed their process to remove it.

Yes, when this product was first introduced it was marketed as a medicine of sorts recommended mainly for symptoms such as headaches, exaustion, and nervousness. This was way back in the late 1800's when coke was first introduced. Cocaine is derived from the leaves of the coca plant; each gallon of syrup created contained roughly five ounces of the coca leaf. It is said that Coca Cola once contained up to 9 milligrams of cocaine per glass. A controversy broke out over this particular ingredient which lead to its removal from the recipe in 1903. To this day the popular soft drink contains coca flavoring in an attempt to keep some of the original flavoring. In fact Coca Cola operates the only factory in the US allowed to process the coca leaf.

yes, it once did. I believe cocaine was illegalized in either 1903 or 08. Therefore, cocaine wasn't allowed anymore. Hence, cocaine really did not receive such a negative stigma until "crack" was popularized in the 80's by poorer neighborhoods.

Yes. The amount was very small, but originally, there was trace amounts of cocaine in it. It occurs naturally in the coca leaf. That didn't last long. Seven-Up originally was called "lithiated lemon" and had lithium in it, which is used today as a medicinal treatment for depression. But the "drugs" in soft drinks of that era were innocuous as compared to the patent medicines of the era, some of which were outright poisonous in substantial doses.

Cocaine was removed from the Coke formula in 1903. However, cocaine-free coca flavoring is still included.

Most sodas started out as medicines, and Coke contained cocaine until the ingredient was removed in the early 1900s.

It contained an extract of coca leaves, and probably had a faint trace of cocaine. Up until 1929, when that trace was removed.
