Did Jesus' half-brothers all believe in him during his public ministry?

If we rely on the biblical evidence, James, Joses, Simon and Judas were Jesus' brothers (Matthew 13:55), not his half-brothers. Certainly, the nativity accounts in both Matthew and Luke leave no room for an older half-brother, and there is no suggestion that Mary had children by another husband after the death of Joseph.
Mark chapter 3 tells of Mary and Jesus' brothers not believing in him, perhaps believing him to be insane. Thus, it would seem that neither Mary nor her children believed in Jesus during his public ministry. This does not accord with Luke's account of an angel appearing to the virgin Mary to tell her of Jesus' destiny, but apparently the author of Mark knew nothing of this.
On the other hand, Paul talks of James the brother of Jesus as the leader of the Jerusalem church not long after the traditional date of the resurrection. If the term 'brother' is taken not as an honorific title, but to mean that this James really was the brother of Jesus, then his elevation to this esteemed role must mean that he believed in Jesus.
