To physically fight against the enemies of Islam
Jihad is to defend your life, home, country, and faith. Jihad is to struggle against unjustifiable desires and against doing bad deeds. In this context, Jihad has no relation with violence and never leads to violent Islam. Islam is never a violent religion. Islam calls for peace and justice and good morals. If Islam calls for defending your lands and properties (called military Jihad) it does not mean violence. If Islam calls Muslims to struggle within themselves to be in the right path of God and not to commit sins, it does not mean violence, Islam calls for peace and tolerance. refer to related question below.
The Arabic word Jihad literally means struggle. This term, especially in Islam, is applied to the struggle or work done in the way of Almighty Allah (God). Unfortunately, this word is confused with the word Qitaal that means Armed fight against enemies of Almighty Allah. The greatest Jihad is against one's own self, one's wicked passions, lust, selfishness etc. An armed fight is the last resort which not only the Muslims but also the other nations/religious followers adopt when their existence is in danger. Islam is a peace loving religion. It does not aim at killing any innocent human being. The Qur'an orders its followers to take up arms and fight against the enemies of Islam if they attack the Muslims. It, however, does not allow the Muslims to fight against peaceful people belonging to any religion.
There aren't groups in ISLAM there is only ISLAM (Qur'an & sunnah) jihad means to strike and struggle for the sake of ALLAH. ISLAM came to the 21st century from the idol worshiping times by jihad, IF there is no jihad there would be no ISLAM.
The term is jihad
Jihad is a struggle against military attacks as well as struggle to follow Islam rules without deviations. Refer to related question below.

Jihad, as described in the Quran, refers to a struggle or effort to strive towards self-improvement, to defend one's faith, or to promote justice and peace. It can be both an internal spiritual struggle (greater jihad) and a physical defense of Islam in the face of aggression (lesser jihad). Terrorism, on the other hand, involves the deliberate targeting of innocent civilians, causing fear and harm, which is explicitly condemned in Islam. Jihad promotes peace, while terrorism goes against the principles of Islam by causing harm to innocent people.
