Mandela was the head of the very powerful African National Congress (ANC) in the 1960's when he was arrested in 1963. Violence was very much a part of the ANC's methods of getting political change. Over the years Mandela deterred this and approved only non violent acts of civil disobedience.

This was true until the early 60's. following the killling of black protesters in a peaceful rally, Mandela decided that violence was unavoidlabe. He headed the military branch of the ANC, travelled overseas to obtain military training and funding. In the eraly violent acts, efforts were made to avoid harming civillians. In the following decades this changed/ While Mandela at this stage was already imprisoned, he remained an inspiration to the ANC. In the 80's he was offered immediate pardon in return for renouncing violence. He refused.

Nelson Mandela planned and set up a bomb in the middle of a train station hence the reason he was locked up in on Robben island a prison but he did not get a death sentence. he was released 27 years later after he was put in two more prisons.
