The Hebrew civilization most directly contributed to the development of both Christianity and Islam. Abraham was a Hebrew and had two sons Ishmael and Jacob. Islam is from Ishmael's lineage and Christianity is from Jacob's lineage.
The Arab people and tribes are descendents of Abraham, not all Muslims are decedents of Ishmael, only the Arab people are the descendants of Ishmael who was one of the sons of Abraham, the other being Isaac. Ishmael is also known as the father of Arabs.

The bible does not tell us how many sons he had, only that he became the father of the Ishmaelites, a wandering race of people. According to the Bible, Ishmael had 12 sons who became twelve tribal chiefs. 13And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam, 14And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa, 15Hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah: 16These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns, and by their castles; twelve princes according to their nations.
There is no evidence that Ishmael was a real, historical person, but according to the Bible he had exactly twelve sons, just as Jacob would also do:Genesis 25:13-16 "And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam, And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa, Hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah: These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns, and by their castles; twelve princes according to their nations."
The twelve sons of Ishmael had the status of rulers; of princes; and they are named in Genesis ch.25: Nevayot, Kedar, Adbe'el, Mivsam, Mishma, Dumah, Masa, Hadad, Teima, Yetur, Naphish, and Kedmah.

Abraham had eight sons: Ishmael (Genesis ch.16), Isaac (ibid. ch.21), and the sons of Keturah, whose names are: Zimran, Yokshan, Medan, Midian, Yishbak, and Shuah (Genesis ch.25). Ishmael fathered twelve sons (ibid.), to whom the Arabs trace their ancestry. Isaac fathered Jacob, ancestor of the Israelites. Isaac also fathered Esau. Of the six sons of Keturah, we are most familiar with the Midianites (Genesis 37:28, Numbers ch.31, Judges 6:1), who lived not far from the Holy Land.
Isaac and Ismael are the sons of Abraham. The descendants of Isaac are the Jewish people. The descendants of Ishmael are the Muslim people.
