Carrying the cross (possibly just the crossbar) was standard practice in Roman crucificxions, to further humiliate the victim, so that he could be seen by the public as a criminal on his way to the place of execution. The Romans wanted to frighten the population, since there were many 'freedom' movements in Palestine at the time (sounds familiar!).
Simon of Cyrene was the man who helped Jesus carry his cross.
Simon of cyrene
Simon of Cyrene.
There is no historical record indicating that Simon of Cyrene died in the same place as Jesus. Simon of Cyrene is known for helping Jesus carry the cross to Golgotha, but there is no further mention of him in relation to Jesus' crucifixion.
Matthew 27:32 tells us that a man of Cyrene, Simon by name helped Jesus carry the cross to Calvary.
Nowhere. Simon of Cyrene was compelled to carry Jesus' cross, and some people suppose him to be black.
a guard ordered him to carry the cross but i am not sure.
The Bible does not mention the name of Simon of Cyrene's mother. Simon of Cyrene was a bystander who was compelled to carry the cross of Jesus on his way to be crucified, as mentioned in Luke 23:27. Simon of Cyrene is also mentioned in Romans 16:13, but there is no additional information about his mother in that passage.
Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus (Mark 15:21)
Although it is not written from whom Jesus received the cross, it is written that a man called Simon from Cyrene was compelled to carry Jesus' cross just after they came out from the judgement hall, (Matthew 27.32)
I can find little information about the topic but, apparently, Simon of Cyrene is considered a saint. There are a number of Catholic and Episcopal churches named for him. Possibly the first 'black' saint.
On the day Jesus of Nazareth was executed, another man (Simon of Cyrene) was forced to carry the cross that Jesus was executed on. Therefore to take up the cross is to carry a burden that is not your own in addition to what you would normally do.
