General Stonewall Jackson was a dedicated Christian. he encouraged prayer, revivals, church ceremonies and fasting among his men during the war. he believed that if they did this they would stay closer to God and he would help them win the War.
Jackson was an extremely religious man. He was married to the daughter of a well known Presbyterian minister. Jackson taught for a dozen years or so at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington. While living in Lexington he taught a Sunday School class for black children. He hated to fight battles (or even march) on Sundays, but had to quite often.
Jackson was also a stern taskmaster and a strict disciplinarian. He had little sympathy for his own soldiers who collapsed on the grueling marches he required of them, which caused them to be sometimes called "foot cavalry", because they covered about as much distance as men mounted on horses. Once an officer requested a furlough to visit his wife, who was about to die. Jackson refused him, asking if he loved his wife more than his country.
He was a strange man in many ways. He loved to suck on lemons. He sometimes went around with one arm (usually the left) held overhead, as he thought this helped equalize the "humors" in his body (his troops, who thought him the embodiment of an Old Testament warrior, believed he was calling down the judgment of heaven on his foes). He could sleep anywhere, even with cannon roaring nearby (he was probably constantly exhausted). Once an officer expressed regret over having to kill a Yankee who had demonstrated great bravery. Jackson completely disagreed, saying that the brave ones should be killed as fast as possible.
