Although at many points early in his career, Roosevelt was seen as divisive, a firecracker, and generally not palpable to the general public, Roosevelt found political footing and democratic appeal that most presidents could never match. Throughout his presidency, Roosevelt was one of the most popular presidents ever.
TR, more than any President before him, believed the US should be a major international power. He leveraged his influence to bring a peaceful resolution to the Russo-Japanese War (for which he earned the Nobel Peace Prize), and interfered in Euro-Central American affairs in order to get the Panama Canal built. He was a true American in his belief in the power of the individual.
TR was very popular with the public. He still remains popular. Within his own party, TR was not initially popular because of his nasty habit of stopping corruption.
