It is often reported that Edison and Tesla were offered the Nobel Prize and they turned it down.

It's a good story - but it's not true, and you can verify that with the Nobel Prize committee as they've answered this a number of times. Neither Nicholai Tesla or Edison were ever offered the Nobel Prize.

In 1915 a Rueters story was written before the prize was awarded. This was picked up and speculated into a rumor by a New York paper that reported the rumor. As the Nobel committee has pointed out - you cannot refuse an award until after you've been given it. They have never recieved the Nobel prize -- so --- they could not have refused it. The year in question, the Nobel Prize went to the Braggs for their work in X-raying Crystaline structures whcih really changed how we understood a lot of things - like - atoms and molecules. :)

Kind of a big deal.

No, Thomas Edison did not win the Nobel Prize. Although he was a prolific inventor with over 1,000 patents to his name, he did not receive this prestigious award.
