England lost in the '98 world cup for a few reasons...Beckham's sending off did contribute to the loss, but he was not the main cause. England played exceptionally well, and were unlucky to lose. You could argue that Simeone with his acting was the cause, as Beckham barely touched him, and Simeone went down clutching his face in agony, and that the referee was a fool to be duped. You could argue that Ince and Batty who missed their penalties were the cause. You could even argue that if England had played better against Romania in the group stages, they would not have had to play against Argentina, they would have played Croatia (then unknown and making their first appearance at the WC) So Beckham was not the main reason for the loss
