No, man created the fear of death because he failed to have adequate fear of God. This phenomenon continues to this present day. Some of the mythological gods were indeed created by man, and their behaviour demonstrates this. The true God transcends man and is totally incomprehensible, except where He has chosen to reveal Himself and where He has given man the ability to know Him.
