Hurricane Katrina was hundreds of miles wide and to say it "went through" is inaccurate. It "went over" and damaged New Orleans, but it also did immense damage to areas along the Gulf Coast east of the city and some to the west.

---

Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans on August 29, 2005. The center did not pass directly over the city, although that would have only increased the wind gusts another 10 to 20 mph. The winds that did hit were strong enough to blow off roofs and blow down trees and power poles. The winds also raised the water levels in the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Pontchartrain, causing extensive flooding.

The eye passed east of the city, crossing from the mouth of the Mississippi River near Buras to the border of Louisiana and Mississippi. Katrina had decreased to a category 3 storm, sustained winds about 125 mph (205 kph) with gusts to about 145 mph (233 kph).

The real damage east of the city was by the storm surge, which inundated levees and knocked down floodwalls. Much of St. Bernard Parish was under water, as was the 9th ward of Orleans Parish. The vast majority of the damage came later in the day as water poured through a breach in a levee west of the city. The water rushed in from Lake Pontchartrain, part of the surge raised by the storm winds. This affected a large area of the city, hitting most of the areas that had not yet experienced flooding. Tens of thousands of homes and businesses were submerged in from 6 to 14 feet of water for as long as 4 weeks.

Hurricane Katrina did not miss Florida. Katrina stuck Florida as a category 1 hurricane, causing widespread damage and 14 deaths. The storm crossed the Florida Peninsula into the Gulf of Mexico, where it rapidly grew and intensified into a category 5 hurricane. Katrina weaken to a category 3 before striking the Gulf Coast where it devastated portions of Louisiana and Mississippi, including New Orleans.

Where did Hurricane Katrina hit?

The hurricane hit the southeast United States, but caused the most damage to New Orleans, since the city is below sea level.Hurricane Katrina made three landfalls in the US. The first was in southeast Florida as a Category One. The second was near the mouth of the Mississippi River (Category 3 or 4), and the last around Waveland, Mississippi as a Strong Category 3.Some levees in New Orleans (proper) didn't falter until the storm was well inland. Mississippi suffered as much catastrophic damage from Katrina as eastern New Orleans, with houses washed away for hundreds of yards from the shore. Mississippi was in the Northeast quadrant of the storm, which is the most dangerous quadrant for winds and tornadoes. In Waveland, MS there were Category 3 winds and a high storm surge inundating areas south of Highway 90 and Interstate 10 for about 5 or 6 hours, but the water receded rather quickly because the area is above sea level. To clarify:New Orleans' Ninth Ward received the most damage, which was due to flooding caused by the levee breaking. But the Mississippi gulf coast received the most storm (wind) damage. The damage from the initial hit in southern Florida was comparatively minor.
