Well, the Roman citizen's didn't really have a choice, as Caesar declared himself a dictator amoungst all, and told them to worship him. At festivals designed for Gods, Caesar was put on parade, and dressed in white robes and crowns. Their respect for him came from fear mostly, but also of pride for their country, because he revived all of the Roman respect in their time of need.
While Pompey had the Roman Senate behind him, and Crassus was the richest man in Rome, Caesar was a popular champion of the common people. Caesar conquered the Gauls, avenging their earlier sack of Rome and adding Gaul as a new area for Roman colonization. Caesar wrote a book about his Gallic conquest which was widely read, and the average Roman saw him as generous and a model of Roman virtue.

Julius Caesar was the hero of the people. The lower classes saw him as a man who stood up to a corrupted aristocracy and who was generous to the people.
This is a true statement. In Act I, Scene 1 of the play Julius Caesar, the people are parading in the streets, celebrating the victory of Julius Caesar in Rome.
Julius Caesar wasn't a king. He was a dictator. The people loved him but, he was a dictator nonetheless.
His response to Julius Caesar was .. would you like a Caesar salad ? :)
