He was another Spanish artist who had made it big - he saw him as a role model. Dali revered Picasso as a youth and even met him in Paris during this time. Dali's pre-surrealist works where heavily cubism, until he found himself as a painter at around 20 years old and his works increasingly became more photorealistic and representative.
Dali then later claimed that while he loved Picasso, he had become more of an anarchist than an artist. As Dali's own technical ability as a painter grew, his disdain for abstraction did also.
At a young age Dali discovered modern painting while on vacation with the family of an early mentor Ramon Picot. Growing up and during his developement of his unique style most of his work was influenced Joan Miro and Pablo Picasso. He has also experimented with other artist's styles like Raphael, Bronzino, Francisco de Zurbaran, Vermeer, and Diego Velázquez.
In the category of movements, he has also experiemented with Cubism, Surrealism and Dada.
