The Anglo-Saxons were not a single tribe- the Anglo-Saxon race of pre-Norman England was made up of a number of different invading races who colonised the country in the Centuries following the departure of the Romans.

The Angles came from Denmark, and the Saxons from the part of Germany we now know as Saxony. There were also the Jutes, from the Low Countries, and a bit later on the Norse Vikings. When the Romans withdrew in the 4th Century AD, they left behind the native Celtic tribes of England and the Romano-British, descendants of mixed marriages between Celts and the Italian Romans. These peoples were subject to repeated waves of incursions over a period of several hundred years from the above mentioned invaders, who at first came in war, raiding coastal villages, plundering and looting, as well as fighting fierce battles with the Celtic tribes. But later on they began to come in peace, to trade, settle down as farmers, inter-marry, and establish strategic alliances with the English inhabitants against common foes from elsewhere. Following the advent of St. Augustine, many Vikings were keen to convert to Christianity and were tired of their old, warrior lifestyle.

Gradually, this melting-pot of races intermingled and intermarried to become the Anglo-Saxon race.

This is not to say that they all lived harmoniously- the country was split up into a number of different small kingdoms, and some Celtic tribes in England held out against becoming assimilated. The last Celtic kingdom in England, Elmet (what is now North Yorkshire) remained independent up until the 8th Century, and the various regions were often at war with each other. The nation was not unified until the time of King Alfred the Great in the late 9th Century.
