Starting at a young age, children were taught enough to read the Bible. Girls would go to primary school long enough to learn how to read The Bible and do simple arithmetic. Boys could learn Latin and other studies and could go on to secondary school, if they were luck enough to live near one, and then could go to college.

Girls, once they dropped out of school were typically taught about raising children (often by caring for their many younger siblings) and how to cook and clean properly.

If a family could not send their children to school, whether because they were too poor or if there were no available school to send them to, the kids would be taught all that the parents knew and send off as an apprentice to learn a trade to hopefully survive on.

Schools used three main books: the Bible, a primer, and a hornbook. A primer is a book writings such as poems that the children often had to memorize rather than read due to a shortage in books. A hornbook looks much like a large wooden paddle with a page of paper attached to it with the ABC's, Roman and regular numerals, and a poem or Bible verse written upon it.
