It's a fast day called Yom Kippur. During Yom Kippur we fast for 25 hours and pray to asking God, asking Him to forgive us for our mistakes from the previous year.
The Torah states that this day has been given to us for atonement of sins (Leviticus 16:30, referring to Yom Kippur). On that day, we fast and pray and beg God to forgive us for all sins which we committed during the year, whether intentionally or not. Our tradition is that the ten days from Rosh Hashanah until Yom Kippur are when the world and its inhabitants are judged for that year (Talmud, Rosh Hashanah 16a and 18a).

Answer 1No telling. Would the breakaway colonies have survived the war against the British if it weren't for French aid and assistance ? Who knows. In both cases, though, it was clearly the right thing to do, and only enhanced the honor and reputation of France and the US.Answer 2There are five wars that occurred between 1948 and 1973 (the Israeli Independence War, the Sinai War, the Six-Day War, the War of Attrition, and the Yom Kippur War). Of them, the United States only provided aid to Israel in the Yom Kippur War. In the Israeli Independence War, the Soviet Union was Israel's primary backer via Czechoslovakia. (The Soviet Union's position would completely change in the 1950s.) In the Sinai War and the Six-Day War, France and the UK (to a lesser extent), backed Israel. In the War of Attrition, Israel was using assets it retained from the previous three wars. It was only in the Yom Kippur War that Israel received US aid.It is likely that Israel would not have survived the Yom Kippur War without US aid, but this is because the Arab countries had extensive Soviet aid and weaponry from the Six-Day War, the War of Attrition, and directly prior to and during the Yom Kippur War. (In the War of Attrition, Soviet soldiers actually gave their lives fighting for Egypt, whereas no US soldier has fallen in defense of Israel.)
