Yes. There was an African American unit in the union army. They were still paid less than the white soldiers and had white officers. A good movie to watch on this is GLORY.

What are the strengths of the union and confederates?

Confederates had the strength of will and frustration to fight to keep their land. They also had the advantage of having most of the battles in their homeland, the South. The Union had the strength of man power, funding from the government, and being well supplied.

Was the union blockade in the south successful?

The blockade efforts of the Union were successful as possible. This was because naval operations at the time did not have modern tools such as radar. A good number of trading ships eluded Union blockades. It greatly diminished Southern trade but it could not shut it down completely. This was no surprise to the Union navy.

Why did the south win the Battle of Chancellorsville?

During the American Civil War, the Battle of Chancellorsville (fought in early May 1863) was won by the South because of the superior generalship of the forces it employed along with serious flaws in the command-decisions of several Union generals in the opposing force. General Robert E. Lee proved himself (yet again) in this battle to be a daring and decisive military commander, daring to split his forces, several times and to good effect, in the face of an enemy that outnumbered his greatly yet suffered from overly cautious or simply incompetent leadership.

Should the armed forces be unionised or not?

I would say no, but I am generally anti-union, and I think armed forces would be the very last thing I would want to see unionized. If there are any good arguments for unionization of armed forces I would like to hear them. By good I mean reasons why it would make the armed forces more effective, and not reasons why it would improve the lot of armed forces members. The armed forces of the Netherlands are unionized, and they are effective, but there must be some problems involved with unionization. I am generally pro-union, but I would have to say that a unionized armed services would be a horrible idea. The goals of a union clash directly with those of a national armed service, and I can't see how this would be a good idea for any country.

Could the Union have won the civil war without former slaves?

The Union did well to be taken into the Union's army. Lincoln thought it was a good idea. He believed the more soldiers under Union commanders could only help end the war sooner. It's true that the Union could have won without them but the North also helped freed Black slaves with their self pride and they fought well. The South also recruited some slaves into their forces, but only a nominal amount, perhaps 5,000.
