Monism is the philosophical view that a variety of existing things can be explained in terms of a single reality or substance. The main forms of religious monism are:

  • Pantheism - the belief that everything composes an all-encompassing, immanent God or that the universe (or nature) is identical with divinity. Pantheists do not believe in a personal or anthropomorphic god.
  • Panentheism - a belief that the divine (be it a monotheistic God, polytheistic gods, or an eternal cosmic animating force), interpenetrates every part of nature, but is not one with nature.
Monotheism is simply the belief that there is one god. This belief can be consistent with monism, however the major monotheistic religions are not monistic.

The two concepts are not really related at all; they simply both contain the roots "mono" meaning "one" and "ism" meaning "ideology or belief".

Monotheism is the belief in and worship of only one god. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are all monotheistic religions since they only worship one god (and believe that He is the only god that exists).

Monism is the belief that something is a singular substance. For example, a dualist will say that a person is both body and soul as two distinct components. In that way, when the body is injured or dies, the soul is uninjured and goes elsewhere. A monist holds that a person's soul is part of his body, so injury or death directly affects the soul because they are one substance.
