RIFF: Resource Interchange File Format
TIFF: Tagged Image File Format
RIFF developed by Microsoft Corporation
TIFF developed by Aldus
RIFF is a general framework file format for multimedia
TIFF is used for images
RIFF makes use of chunks
TIFF makes use of image file directories
Both are based on using TAGS
TIFF is somehow similar to other raster formats like JPEG, PNG, BMP, etc. See the related question to get an overview on similarities and differences between these formats.
TIFF format is developed by Aldus(now adobe) corporation. RIFF format is jointly developed by IBM and Microsoft. TIFF is totally a new format. RIFF is not new format it just provides wrapper around existing file formats to provide platform independence. TIFF stores only bitmap data. RIFF can store other data also. TIFF includes nu. of compression schemes that allow developers to choose the best space or time trade-off for their application. RIFF includes Microsoft proprietary compression algorithms. Suitable for pre-press applications. not suitable for pre-press application. In TIFF tags are used for random access. In RIFF list chunks are used for random access. Information is stored in Image file directory. Information is stored in chunks. It contains 8 byte header to identify tiff file. it contain riff chunk to identify riff file.
Image file formats.
Jpeg, gif, tiff
For online fax service, fax documents are usually in PDF, TIFF or plain text formats.
TIFF is a lossless compression. JPEG throws away data to reduce file sizes.
Internet faxes are automatically converted by the server into PDF or TIFF formats.
There are JPEG, BMP, GIF, PNG, DIB, TIFF as common formats, and more.
The effect of the GIF,JPEG,PNG,BMP and TIFF on the data transfer
PNG, JPEG, TIFF, GIF, PSD, or BMP.
Multi-page One final important difference between TIFF and most other image file formats is that TIFF defines support for multiple images in a single file. Such a file is then called 'multi-page' TIFF. Thus, the TIFF format is very well suited to e.g. store the many pages of a single fax in a single file. http://www.awaresystems.be/imaging/tiff/faq.html
Any Mac software that handles graphics (Preview for example) can convert between tiff and jpg (or any of the other popular formats). For most applications you would open your tiff file and then select Save As and there will be an option to select the required Format.
