There certainly is a cynical way of looking at the DISADVANTAGES of science. From a world view perspective, the world is becomming overpopulated because of the advances in medicine. People are living longer, mothers survive childbirth and live to have more children, men survive work accidents and war wounds, birth defects are being corrected and children with faulty genetics are being given the opportunity to live long lives and pass on their genetic flaws. On the other hand, from a self-centered perspective, I get to live to enjoy my children, grandchildren and probably even great-grandchildren. Science is defeating many of the illnesses that took such an emotional and physical toll in centuries past. Years ago, someone with Asthma would have died from the wood smoke that they had to live with just from heating their homes. Today we have medical treatments for those conditions and have determined how to significantly clean up the air in our homes. Years ago, horses would kill quite a few people every day but that was the primary means of providing power and pulling wagons so we had to put up with it. Today, although cars kill people daily, the percentage of deaths from automobile use is considerably less than the people who were killed by a spooked horse. Yes, there are disadvantages, but I wouldn't trade for the "good old days" for anything.
