In The Kite Runner how does amir's character change to kindness?

In the Beginning of the novel Amir was always trying to get Babas approval. Amir felt that Baba liked Hassan more. Because Hassan would be the one to stick up for himself and Amir, while Amir was hidding behind him. They did have a relationship but it was not a good one. I think theirs was just father son relationship. Nothing special about it.
