Yes they work well. There are many types but all have the same basic operation of converting the analog video stream of VGA into a digital equivalent.

There is a myth that HDMI is better than other signal formats. Be assured that this is absolutely not true. An HDMI signal generated from a VGA signal will not be any better than the original VGA signal. HDMI is simply a digital signal format and carries a signal in the same way that VGA or any other interface carries a signal.

So, use a VGA to HDMI converter if you need to connect it to a display that only has and HDMI input. Don't use one if there is an existing VGA input available as it won't make the picture any better.

Whether or not it works depends upon the source. Non-copy protected signals such as computer desktop displays can use this adapter, but copy protected signals that use HDCP - High Definition Content Protection such as Blu-ray Players (including players built into computers) will not work.

Short answer, no. This is because VGA is analogue and HDMI is digital so an adaptor is not going to convert the signal. You can buy them but the chances are they will not work.
