The Moon does not "give off" any light; it merely reflects the light of the Sun. And since the Moon is about the color of a charcoal briquette (with an albedo of about 5) it's surprising that it is as bright as it is.

There is nothing special about the light itself; it travels the way any light travels. Light is the visible part of the wide spectrum of electromagnetic radiation. Unlike sound, light does not need a medium through which to travel, so it travels through space in the form of the wave/particles that we typically call photons. You may be asking about what produces the light we see when we look up at the moon. We are actually seeing sunlight, but it is sunlight that is reflecting off the surface of the moon. It is the same basic principle that allows us to see anything at all, when we are outdoors during the day, and observing the world in the natural, ambient light that comes to earth's surface from the sun. Sunlight reflects off the surfaces of objects that we see, our eyes focus the light as an image onto our retinas, and the optic nerve takes the information to the brain where it is processed as vision.

Stars don't need to reflect light, they generate their own. The moon and planets reflect light from the sun, our local star. In past generations, the word star referred to anything that could be seen in the heavens. Today we make the distinction between stars and other kinds of heavenly bodies.

No. The Moon has no light emitting energy. The light we see from the Moon is nothing more than reflected light from the Sun.

This is why we see different shapes of the Moon as it goes through its cycle of phases. We see the moon from different angles as it moves relative to the sun.

The Moon can be seen as a 'glow in the dark' type system. Throughout the day, the sun in shining on the moon, (even though we can't see it), so by the time the sun sets and the Moon rises, it's absorbed enough light from the sun in order to glow/shine in the dark.

It takes about 1 month for the moon to orbit around the earth, with the movement around the sky due to the earth's rotation.

When the sun and moon are on opposite sides of the earth, one gets a "full moon" with a nearly circular shape to the reflection. This is when a lunar eclipse may occur with the earth between the sun and moon, and thus shading the moon.

When the sun and moon are on the same side of the earth, one gets a "New Moon", and the moon is essentially invisible, or barely visible during the day. This is when a solar eclipse may occur.

When the sun and moon are at other angles, the moon appears like a wedge.
