Are West Highland Terriers Good Dogs?

i use to have a westie! he was the best dog.........they are good dogs, good watchdogs, excellent with children good temperment. however its also how the dog is raised if you socialize it from a puppy it would be a great dog..........and they are so adorable!! hope this helps! I agree talk to your dog when a puppy! call them play with them nuture them like u would a child exept no diaper change!

Normally, westies are fiesty little dogs so they are better with older children they may nip though show your children how to handle them, and be gently but firm towards unnessisary behaviour and they should be fine.

There will be some tension at first, and probably some quibbling. For the most part it is best to leave them to sort out their differences and only referee if fur starts flying.

In time the two should be able to come to accept each other; and will probably even become friends.

Generally, the West Highland White Terrier is tolerate and friendly with children. However, since some children are too young understand that dogs have feelings just like we do, they may hurt a dog, such as pulling its tail, tugging its ears, etc. Their screaming and sudden movement may also startle a dog, which may cause a dog, even gentle ones like Westies, to bite to defend for itself, mistaking the children for attacking it. Therefore, it is not wise for a child to be left with a Westie unsupervised. Make sure that there is at least an adult in the presence with the child, until he or she is emotionally mature enough to understand that dogs are life and know how to be safe around dogs.

i have a 8 year old border terrier and mine dont like cats but its probs just her. dont let this put this off though cause there wonderful dogs and i would strongly recomend getting one ;)
