If you have odors coming from the engine area you probably have something leaking be it oil, engine coolant or exhaust. If the engine is overheating, a radiator flush may or may not help because there are several reasons why it could be overheating. Take it to a trusted mechanic for diagnoses.
A small amount of antifreeze smell may be emitted from the radiator overflow. However if you smell antifreeze you need to make sure there isn't a leak. It may be something simple if you catch it early.
A faulty fan clutch. A sticky thermostat. Low on coolant (leak in system). Missing fan shroud. Restricted air flow through radiator (plugged with debris). Restricted coolant flow through inside of radiator (in need of flushing).
if you are flushing the radiator instead of topping it up. you need to buy a gallon of it and dilute it with clean water. read the instruction and follow.
A raidator in need of a flush will not cause a battery drain.
The radiator fan may be smoking on your Mustang if there is a radiator leak. You will need to check the radiator to make sure there is enough water and fluid inside.
The radiator tends to clog up after many years of operation. This causes poor coolant circulation and over heating of the engine. Flushing the radiator will clean this out and restore its cooling capability. Doing it yourself is a messy job but it can be done. You need to collect the old antifreeze also as it is toxic. Buy a radiator flush solvent and just follow the instructions on the container. Hope this is helpful
Pull both hoses from the radiator and see if you can run water through at a high rate from your hose. It's possible that flushing the radiator did not remove some of the blockage. You may need to have the radiator professionally cleaned/rodded. If that isn't it, yea, it's probably the water pump. sometimes when a water pump is bad, you can hear a sqealing noise, not always though. it is possible for this to be the prob, but you might also check to see if a temperature sensor may be bad.
Most of the time the radiator fluid fails to complete its circuit and is probably clogged leaving it to overheat -------------- Bad thermostat Bad head gasket Cracked head Low coolant level Debris in the radiator fins Cooling system may need flushing
It's overheating when driven because there is much more heat to dissipate than when it is just idling. Your radiator might need back flushing or your thermostat needs replacing. Change the stat first, then flush the radiator.

Remove the lower radiator hose, but make sure your able to contain the coolant to prevent splashing everywhere. ----------- Or, you can remove the drain bolt from the underside of the radiator to drain some of the fluid, and remove the drain bolt from the engine block to get a lot of the rest. To get everything out, you'd either need a flushing machine or you need to flush the system manually. Replace with 50% distilled water and 50% of an antifreeze reccommended for your car.
If your radiator is leaking then you will need to replace it. Additionally, if you find that your car is constantly running hot you will need a new radiator.
