Yes, I have an American Standard toilet and an Olsonite toilet set.
No the standard toilet seat covers are for the standard round toilet seats. The universal will fit the long oblong shaped toilet seats.
They vary depending on manufacture. Compromise to fit as many people as possible. We are designed to go squating. To tall of a toilet would make it more difficult. Taller toilets are made to aid elderly and physically challenged people to use toilet.
In the simplest of terms elongated toilets allow for more room for body part clearance when a person, especially men are sitting on the toilet. With rounded bowls there is not enough room for a mans penis to fit and many times while sitting on a rounded toilet a man may urinate straight out of the bowl and down the outside or onto his clothes. Additionally of a person is over weight elongated toilets allow for more room over all and create a comfort level that rounded small bowl toilets can not. for further info read my blog (see my bio for details) for an article about elongated and ADA height toilets.
If a toilet handle breaks off there are many places to buy cheap handles that will fit the toilet in need. One store is Lowe's which has handles for many popular brands of toilets.
