In The Bible the angels "appeared" before humans. They didn't walk in the door they "apparated" (for Harry Potter fans) or "teleported (for sci fi fans). They delivered messages. They wielded flaming swords (perhaps akin to a light saber). They can became invisible to man but not animals. Remember the story in The Bible of the scared mule who would not go past the invisible angel with the again flaming sword.

An angel was sent to guard the door to Eden. The angel was a cherubim. This was the highest order of angels not the chubby Victorian infants who fly on wings. This angel must of been big enough to wield a flaming sword big enough to keep out mankind.

They had no need of wings to fly as they suddenly appeared. There is no mention of wings on angels in the Bible except on the statues on the Ark of The Covenant.

In the book of Enoch the angel are "The Watchers". They were sent to observe and the Lord became angry with them when they interfered with mankind by teaching him science, astrology and magic. Angels must then be technologically advanced. As to magic it's unclear if this was just technology beyond the grasp of mankind at that time or magic in the true sense.

Per Enoch they messed with the biology of animals. Enoch assumes that they mated with the animals to produce new animals, but again this may just be advanced cloning/grafting techniques to generate new animals. The wings on man may just be more of this experimenting. They do look lovely, but can you imagine how impractical they would be. Try driving or riding a coaster with those things attached to you.

Anyway, The angels listed were all males and took to wife humans and this is the reason for their "fall". Per Enoch, they were sent to observe and not interfere. It doesn't get any more in line with interfering that it does to marry someone you are supposed to by studying. Can you imagine Jane Goodall picking an ape to marry? Yuck...

I wonder if someday we will find the bones from their experiments: unicorns, pegasus, giants, dragons who knows. Archaeologists can only extract ancient bones from areas that have preserved them well, such as fossilization. Or frozen like the woolly mammoth. Who knows? Maybe Enoch was right.

They also had the power of assention. They would take humans up to the sky with them to "heaven" or wherever angels go.

They had the power to produce a "star" to shine over Bethlehem for Christ's birth.

They have the power to fight one another as in the great battle mentioned in the Bible. They must have used those "flaming swords". That would have been some battle to see. Maybe this was where George Lucas got his idea for The Jedi.

They had the power to sing better than humans. As when God speaks of how humans cannot sing as well as the heavenly hosts.

And again, they do not interfere with us unless sent by God. Per Enoch, those who did were sent to live underground in a desert for 1000 years. So apparently they have the power to do good or evil, but if they disobey God they are punished just as we are.

Finally, they were the guardians of portals. In Judaism, they guarded entrance to the garden of Edan. Maybe they will let us back in someday.

Angel's, in stories, writing, and such, usually have power over the Elements. (Air, Water, Electricity. Usually things pertaining to the sky. Some are said to have healing power as well)

Angels in The Bible are usually Messengers of God, and their "power" is to appear human to deliver a message.

Traditionally angels have the powers of unaided flight (wings were added by the church) Control over fire and light, healing, being able to understand and speak any language perfectly and finally the ability to sense 'darkness' and corruption in those around them.

Another viewAngels ("angelos") were created to:-
  • worship God

  • praise God
  • be messengers of God
  • Wait upon Christ
  • carry out God's judgements
  • guard people from physical harmbe [ie 'guardian angels']
  • guard Christians from spiritual harm [ie 'guardian angels']
  • guard Christian churches
  • fight spiritual warfare against Satan and his fallen angels

Angels have tremendous powers and can do amazing things: (rather than itemize them, just see any "zap! pow!" cartoon or movie hero or villian.)

However, angels have weaknesses:-

  • these very same great powers can also lead to Pride and Arrogance, (which is what caused the archangel Lucifer and 1/3 of the angels to fall to this temptation and become Satan and the fallen angels.)
  • Angels cannot repent
  • Angels cannot grow spiritually

Angels only have the powers needed to perform their duties; as assigned them by their God Jehovah.

In the days of the Israelites, one angel was given the power to destroy 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in one night.

But no doubt they have other purposeful assignments; and God always provides the powers needed to perform them successfully.

Even disobedient angels (called demons) have some powers. In the days of Noah, some created human bodies for themselves, and co-habited with human women. That's quite a feat, to create a human body for themselves. Scientist haven't been able to do that yet.

What are the seraphim angels job?

Seraphim (fiery angels) praise God ceaselessly. Angels in general glorify God's presence, as do the upper worlds. As an analogy, if you see a king with a retinue of myriads and endless lands, you get a sense of the greatness of his power. Angels also provide a backdrop for the deserving in the afterlife; and they carry out errands. One such errand involving a seraph is described in Isaiah 6:6-7.
