Depending on the species, bats feed on a variety of fruits, insects, small mammals, birds and even small reptiles and amphibians, but they do not drink human blood. Vampire bats do drink blood from birds and mammals, particularly livestock, as they are readily available.

However, if human prey is available, vampire bats will take the opportunity to drink their blood as they are mammals, too. They do not seek blood from the neck or veins, but are more interested in extremities - such as the big toe - where their tiny bite is less likely to be noticed.
