They certainly do bark, although it sounds to us more like a very short, high-pitched "chip". In the Fall, chipmunks will position themselves in a favored spot and bark repeatedly for many minutes at a time, with a repetition rate of upwards of five barks per second. This is believed to have a territorial function. People unfamiliar with the woods may believe they are hearing a bird call, because of the high pitch of the chirp and the continuous nature of the chipmunk voice.

Why is Alvin and the chipmunks are not real?
It's impossible for three chipmunks sing songs, wearing the same clothes that we do. Oh and to go to school, to talk in our language. So as you are able to see, it impossible for Alvin and the Chipmunks to actually be, well real. Sorry.
