Some people think they do. Some would say that an elephant has such a small eye for its size that it needs to clean it often. The elephant seems to cry because its eyes are constantly cleaned by the tear duct.

They are one of the most socially, and emotionally complex creatures on earth. Elephants grieve and feel sorrow just like people. I'm not sure if they cry, you could be thinking of the secretion around the males eyes, when in must, or like the above answer states, cleaning of its eyes.

Absolutely. Of course elephants have feelings. I suggest that you read "When Elephants Weep", a book that details the emotional lives of many different animal species, including elephants (as the title suggests). While there is a danger of anthropomorphizing (ascribing human qualities to a non-human animal), some basic emotions that other animals do experience include contentment, fear, anger, sadness, and perhaps even jealousy.

Yes, elephants are very strongly tied emotionally with their families. Some examples- 1. They never forget one of their own. 2. When one of them die, they have a "funeral" and mourn. 3. Mothers have been known to starve themselves if their babies die. 4. If a nursing babies mother has died, others in the group will usually take it in as their own.

I saw an elephant smile when at the circus this spring. A trainer brought out a carrot and as soon as the elephant saw it she (most of all the elephants in this circus are females) saw it she put on a huge grin - i wish i took a picture.
