Depending on the species will determine how much sunlight the gecko enjoys. Species such as the crested gecko cannot withstand temperatures higher than 80F. This species will not enjoy basking in the sunlight. Other species such as the leopard or fat tailed gecko, come from a hot and dry area and enjoy basking in the sun.
You can't unless you wear hats, long sleeves, and stay in the shade. If you are like me I have freckles and am fair I burn through my clothes and in the shade.

If it's not too hot outside; if it is they would much rather stay in the shade than out in the sun. Otherwise, on a nice warm day or the sun on a cold day is something they find highly pleasant to remain in and sun themselves. They get lots of Vitamin D when they're out in the sun.

To stay sun safe while outdoors, wear sunscreen with at least SPF 30, reapply every 2 hours, wear protective clothing like hats and sunglasses, seek shade during peak sun hours, and stay hydrated.
