People drink dirty water wherever there is not a source of clean/sanitized water available. Third world countries contain the most people susceptible to having to drink dirty water because of the lack of sanitation and poor conditions that they live in.

Drinking water is in short supply all over the world. Countries are experiencing unusual droughts. Other countries are spending billions installing desalination plants to change sea water into fresh. Others are building dams that destroy valuable agricultural land. Weather and rainfall patterns seem to be changing all over the world. They are in competition with farmers who want the water for their crops. If you have clean drinking water piped into your house then consider how much of it you waste every day. We use clean drinking water to flush our toilets and wash our cars. The world population is increasing very fast, and the demand for water is huge. We need to stop wasting it.
Dysentery is caused by drinking contaminated water. Soldiers in WW1 often did not have access to clean water supplies.
