The cocos or coconut tree grows in tropical regions which have both warm conditions and regular rainfall. now this is slightly a guess. but perhaps the name stems from the palms trees all over and shipped into Palm Springs and the fact that they have natural hot springs that are very popular as well. thus combining "palm" trees and Hot "springs" to make palm springs.
