Particles will move faster when heated and slower when cooled.

Faster. Temperature is a measurement of average kinetic energy, so as the temp goes up, so does the average KE. This means they will move faster. Also, since Absolute Zero (-273 degrees C) is theoretically when all molecular motion is supposed to stop, it can be thought that the colder the system becomes, the slower the molecules are moving. *Note this is AVERAGE kinetic energy. Some molecules will move faster, and some will mover slower.*

Particles don't "move" when object heat up. When objects are being heated, they get more energy. Lets us an example, a piece of steel. When the steel is heated, thermal (heat) energy is being transfered into the steel. The particles in the steel get more energy, then begin to vibrate. The particles will bounce into each other whilst doing this, giving each other MORE energy. So to answer your question, particles don't get FASTER when they heat up... They VIBRATE when the object gets more ENERGY.
