Yes. indeed they are. i have lived on the sea coast of Maine for 28 years and work for a conservation society who is devoted to ridding the rivers of lobster gear and fishing nets so the marine mammals and wildlife does not get caught in them and drown. i once had a friend porpoise names eye patch. i had saved eye patch from being entangled in a drift net. her pod never left her and she lived in the harbor but every morning she would come to my dock and i would feed her my left over dinner from the night before. she would follow my ship where ever i went (including month long trips i would take to places as far as Iceland eye patch learned to love me and accept me as her pod. she later died in a storm when she got separated from my ship and after searching for 3 weeks i gave up hope on ever seeing her again. five years later a pod of porpoises were crossing my ship's path and one of the porpoises, eye patch, only distinctive by her one eye that had been gouged out by the old drift net came to my ship and stayed with me for the rest of the day until we both went our separate ways. there is not doubt in my mind that she understood who i was and what i did, i protect her kind and had defended me many times. i make it my life commitment to save the oceans and her habitat from human destruction.
